DIY Boho Coasters - Macrame & Twine Coasters

Boho Decor

What is boho decor? Whilst many of you have probably heard of this style of decor (given that it has become increasingly popular of late), there are those of you who may be scratching your head thinking ‘what the heck is boho?’

Well, long story short, ‘Boho’ stands for ‘Bohemian’ which is a style as unique as each individual on this planet. With its roots in the early 19th century, it is probably the most creative and free style there is. The only rule with this style, is that there are no rules. The elements of the Boho style consist of layering various styles into one. You can combine rustic and hippie (basically what I do with my store BohoJo’s Decor), or shabby chic and vintage, eclectic and industrial, etc.

A common theme in this style is to combine nature with artistic design, lot’s of plants or various woods with soft comfortable materials, throw rugs, pillows, etc. Basically you can design it to your liking and unique taste.

I personally love natural fibres, reclaimed wood, earthy tones, plants and comfortable, light coloured fabrics. These coasters fit perfectly with the style I want to create in my home. You can work these coasters into your own personal style or be creative and use them as a template to make something different and totally unique. So let’s get to work on these DIY Boho Coasters!

1. What You’ll Need For Your DIY Boho Coasters

Scissors for macrame work

You won’t need a lot of supplies for this project, the main items you will need are:

Materials:

  1. Cork Coasters
  2. 15 x 12cm macrame cord or soft rope
  3. 140cm x 6mm Jute Twine

Tools:

  1. A Hot Glue Gun
  2. Comb or Pet Brush
  3. A Pair of Scissors

You can find any of the supplies for your DIY boho coasters at your local stores or online at Amazon.com or Amazon.com.au (I get my macrame cord on Etsy though), or if you want to go direct to the wholesaler to save some $$ and you’re willing to wait a little while for postage, then you can get just about anything and everything on Aliexpress.com (Get $5 off $20 with code NEWUS5 or $8 off $40 with code NEWUS8).

I also sell the complete kit (including cork coasters, tape measure, and pre-cut cord & twine) to make 6 coasters, on my Etsy store HERE

Step 1

First we need to glue our cord fringe onto the cork coaster:

  1. Fold each cord in half and unravel the cords at the top (so that the entwined cords are separated)
  2. Use a hot glue gun to glue the unravelled part of the cord to the coasters edge
  3. Continue until the coaster edges are full of cord
  4. Use your comb or pet brush to brush out the cords

Second, we need to add the jute twine.

  1. Fold the end 1cm of your twine over and glue this to the centre of your cork coaster (It may help to put a pencil mark in the centre before you begin.
  2. Using the hot glue gun, wind the twine around in a snail pattern and glue it down onto the cork coaster
  3. When you reach the diameter of the coaster and all your cord is covered, cut the excess twine off and
  4. Glue down the end, making sure that all the entwined threads are secured

Finally, you need to cut your fringe to the desired length. I did a 3cm fringe around my coasters, but you can choose another length if you prefer.

  1. You can either cut a circle in paper or cardboard to use as a stencil for cutting the right shape, or
  2. Just eye ball it (for a more hand-made, rustic look)
  3. Give your fringe one last brush with your comb or pet brush
  4. Use your coasters or gift them to someone special
